Virgil van Dijk returned to St Mary’s for the first time since his £75 million January transfer to Liverpool this afternoon.
The Dutch centre-back, who wanted to join the Reds back in the summer but eventually sealed his move to Anfield last month, left his former employers under a cloud.
No doubt he will have been desperate to have got one over Southampton this afternoon.
He did just that, helping Liverpool keep a clean sheet in a comfortable 2-0 victory for the Reds.
First-half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah sealed all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who move back above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table.
Southampton, meanwhile, find themselves inside the relegation zone with just 11 matches of the season remaining.
Fighting to keep their heads above water but be all the tougher without the imperious Van Dijk at the heart of their defence.
VAN DIJK HAS HAD A MIXED START AT LIVERPOOL
The 26-year-old has experienced a mixed start to life at Anfield.
While his debut against Everton had a fairy-tale ending – he scored the winning goal in front of the Kop – he hasn’t yet been able to solve Liverpool’s defensive woes.
However, today’s result was undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
VAN DIJK DID SOMETHING HILARIOUS BEFORE KICK-OFF
Prior to kick-off, there was a very funny moment involving Van Dijk which not many people have seen yet.
Per Sky Sports, the Netherlands international attempted to enter the home dressing room.

It’s easily done, though, we imagine. He spent three years at Southampton, so St Mary’s has been his second home for the past few seasons.
Bet he was delighted when he remembered he was supposed to be in the away dressing room instead.
