Manchester United and Jose Mourinho simply don’t do trophyless seasons.
But, whether they like it or not, they will finish the 2017/18 campaign empty-handed.
Their FA Cup final against Chelsea was make or break.
And Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty made sure it was very much break for the Red Devils.
They finished nineteen points behind Manchester City in the Premier League and crashed out of the last-16 of the Champions League against Sevilla.
Whichever way you dress it up, it’s been a poor season for United – especially when you consider some of the underwhelming football they’ve played this season.
However, throughout this campaign, Mourinho has been trying to tell everyone how good it’s been.
Even after their bitterly disappointing Champions League exit to Sevilla in March, Mourinho attempted to get over on his rivals – and it’s come back to haunt him.
When the reporter asked Mourinho in his post-match interview whether United’s season now relies on a top-four finish and the FA Cup, Mourinho pointed to his rivals – most notably Liverpool.
WHAT MOURINHO SAID BACK IN MARCH
“Fantastic team like Tottenham has exactly the same as us,” Mourinho said.
“Liverpool has the Champions League but doesn’t have the FA Cup.”
Mourinho: Liverpool have the Champions League, but we have the FA Cup 😂
He's actually taking the piss out of United fans – amazing!

While Mourinho was only stating facts back then, two months on he looks pretty silly.
Liverpool still have the Champions League and United are left with absolutely nothing.
And following their FA Cup defeat, Liverpool fans couldn’t stop laughing at the Portuguese boss.
LIVERPOOL FANS ARE KILLING MOURINHO

When they got knocked out of Europe, Mourinho said “Liverpool have the Champions League, we have the FA Cup”. One of those things remains true. I’m not going to laugh at Utd until we know how our game goes, but even if we lose I think we’ve had a better season. Fun, for a start.

Of course, Liverpool themselves will end the season trophyless if they fail to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev next weekend.
But if they do, there’s no doubt their season will be far better than anything Mourinho has achieved at Old Trafford.
