What happened when Mohamed Salah played for Roma against Liverpool in 2016

So, Mohamed Salah will return to Roma with his Liverpool side in the Champions League semi-final.

When the Egyptian swapped Roma for Liverpool in the summer, he probably couldn’t have dreamt that his former side and new side would be meeting in the final four of Europe’s elite competition.

But after Roma produced a miraculous comeback against Barcelona and Liverpool beat Manchester City both home and away in the quarter-finals, that’s exactly what will happen.

Of course, the two sides have plenty of history but the last time they actually faced each other in a competitive match was back in 2002.

On that day, Liverpool needed to win by two clear goals to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals – something they did thanks to goals from Jari Litmanen and Emile Heskey.

But they have, in fact, met more recently than that.

In a pre-season friendly in 2016 at St Louis, Salah’s Roma side took on Liverpool.

But what happened during the 90 minutes?

Well, Jurgen Klopp got to see Salah up close and personal with the German manager no doubt already having the winger on his radar.

And he would have been pleased with what he saw in the United States that evening.

Salah was lively during the 65 minutes he played, as seen in his individual highlights video below:

Salah’s performance helped the Italian triumph 2-1 with Edin Dzeko and Salah himself scoring the goals.

In first-half injury-time, Sheyi Ojo – who is currently on loan at Fulham – scored an equaliser for Klopp’s men.

Of course, nobody knew back then that Salah would sign for Liverpool 12 months later and run absolute riot during his first season.

And his impressive performance in front of Klopp one year previously may have actually convinced Klopp to part with the £37 million the following summer.

And it’s very much £37million well spent.

His latest strike against Bournemouth on Saturday was his 40th in all competitions with the winger smashing all sorts of club records in the process.

Just imagine if he had a stinker in that friendly match back in 2016…
