Gareth Southgate proved he was more than happy to upset a few big names when he announced England’s World Cup squad earlier this month.
Joe Hart’s international career looks to be over despite the goalkeeper being the Three Lions’ most capped current player with 75 appearances.
Neither Chris Smalling nor Jack Wilshere will be on the plane either, with the Arsenal midfielder having voiced his displeasure at the decision on social media.
James Tarkowski has had to withdraw from the five-man standby list with a hernia, which leaves Tom Heaton, Lewis Cook, Jake Livermore and Adam Lallana as Southgate’s potential go-to’s should any of his current 23 get injured.
Lallana is undoubtedly the most high-profile of those candidates and it was disappointing that he missed out considering he was one of the few to contribute anything at Euro 2016.
However, the former Southampton man has endured terrible luck with injuries this season and has started just once in the Premier League, featuring 12 times in total.
It will take something special to prove to Southgate that he is fit enough to be relied upon – but that is what the 30-year-old has come up with.
The Daily Mail report that he will turn up to training four days early, despite Liverpool players being allowed extra time off because of their participation in the Champions League final.
PUTTING IN AN EXTRA SHIFT
Lallana did come on against Real Madrid as a replacement for Mo Salah following the Egyptian’s shoulder dislocation.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson will not be joining him, yet he is so desperate to win his international manager over he is going the extra mile.
It has to be said he didn’t look all that sharp on Saturday. Still, the game time must have done him good.
What will particularly frustrate Lallana is that Southgate is actually a huge fan of his attacking ability and were it not for his injuries, he would be among the first names in the squad.
Interestingly, the newspaper also suggest that the three Liverpool players in and around the squad will have access to a sports psychologist to help them deal with the disappointment of the defeat to Madrid.
It’s still going to be a long shot for Lallana to force his way into England’s plans, but he can’t be faulted for effort.
