Jurgen Klopp will have wanted Liverpool’s spot in next season’s Champions League secured before he watched his side take on Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.
But draws against West Brom and Stoke, and a defeat to Chelsea, meant the Reds were made to wait until the final day of the season to confirm their place in the top four.
It means Liverpool won’t need to defeat Real Madrid in the Champions League final to be in Europe’s elite competition – although they will be desperate to do so, of course.
Mohamed Salah got the ball rolling in the 26th minute with his 32nd league goal, setting a new record for most goals in a 38-game season in England’s top flight.
“Liverpool score and @MoSalah breaks the record with his 32nd goal of the season, beating @Cristiano @alanshearer & @LuisSuarez9,” Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeted.
Dejan Lovren headed home to make it 2-0 before half-time and Dominic Solanke added a third with his first goal for the Reds after the interval.
VAN DIJK’S PASS
It was a brilliant way for Liverpool to close the Premier League season and, with Naby Keita to arrive in the summer, fans have every right to be confident about the 2018-19 campaign.
It was great to see Salah break the record and Solanke score his first Liverpool goal, but another moment left Liverpool fans stunned on Twitter.
It came in the first half, when centre-back Virgil van Dijk located Trent Alexander-Arnold with a brilliant pass.
It really was special.

Van Dijk has been superb since his £75 million move from Southampton in January and has played a major role in their run to the Champions League final.
And with a range of passing like that, it’s safe to put him in the class among the finest defenders in Europe.
