Believe it or not, England vs Sweden wasn’t the only game kicking off on Saturday afternoon.
In a strange moment of scheduling, Liverpool got their pre-season campaign underway with a friendly against Chester in front of some of the few fans missing England’s quarter-final.
However, it was no ordinary friendly for Liverpool supporters as it presented the first opportunity for them to see Naby Keita playing in the famous red jersey.
Kopites have been anticipating his arrival at the club for almost an entire year with RB Leipzig insisting that the Guinea international played a final season in Germany.
Even when their campaign ended, though, there was still an excruciating wait until late June for his unveiling and then July 7 marked his unofficial debut.
KEITA PLAYED 45 MINUTES VS CHESTER
Fellow new signing Fabinho pulled on the Liverpool jersey for the first-half against Chester, before Keita introduced himself after the break.
And while you can only establish so much from a friendly against a team from the sixth tier of England football, fans still got the chance to see what Keita’s game is all about.
The 23-year-old entered the match with Liverpool leading 2-0 – the Reds eventually won 7-0 – and to say supporters were impressed by his performance would be putting things mildly.
KEITA’S BRILLIANT INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
Keita quickly started orchestrating the midfield from a deep lying role and turned provider for a Daniel Sturridge goal with a typical piece of pressing.
He looked like a Jurgen Klopp player in every respect.
