Virgil van Dijk proved his class with statement on Twitter after winning PFA POTY

Virgil van Dijk was named PFA Player of the Year on Sunday night following an outstanding season for Liverpool in the Premier League.

Signed in January 2018 from Southampton for £75m, there were once doubts about whether the Dutchman was worth a record-breaking sum for a defender.

Well, safe to say those doubts no longer exist.

In his 16 months at Liverpool, Van Dijk has arguably developed into the world’s best centre-back above Sergio Ramos, who for so long has been regarded as number one.

Van Dijk has been impregnable at the back for Jurgen Klopp and there’s a chance he’ll be further rewarded with a Premier League medal at the end of the season.

Liverpool are second in the table with two games remaining and all they need is for Manchester City to drop points against Leicester City or Brighton.

Winning the title would be nothing less than Van Dijk deserves for his performances and following his win at the PFA awards he’s released a classy statement on Twitter.

In the tweet below, the 27-year-old thanks his family, former clubs and everyone at Liverpool for helping him become the player he is today.

“What an amazing evening at the PFA awards last night,” wrote Van Dijk. “I am so proud and honoured to have won such a prestigious award and feel incredibly humbled to have been recognised by my fellow professionals in this way.

“As I mentioned last night when I received the award there are a few people I would like to thank. Firstly and most importantly thank you to my family for always being there to support me.

“Thank you to everyone at FC Groningen, Celtic FC and Southampton FC for being such a crucial part of my journey and development as a player.

“This of course would not have been possible without the unbelievable support I have from everyone at Liverpool FC. A special thank you to the manager for showing belief in me and to all of my teammates who help me so much in every game on the pitch. This award is for you.

“And of course thank you to our amazing fans for the support since I’ve been at Anfield, I love this club and have felt part of the family since the day I arrived.

“It was a privilege to have been there last night too to share it with Sadio, Robbo and Trent, congratulations on your trophies too. Now time to focus on Wednesday night. See you in Barcelona. We’ll be ready.”
