Virgil van Dijk… the best defender in the world?
The Liverpool star is certainly in the conversation after some mind-blowing seasons at Anfield.
Looking back on his move to the Reds from Southampton in 2017, Liverpool would’ve been happy to pay double the amount that they did if they knew how good Van Dijk would be.
“I love him. I think he’s the best in the world right now,” said Rio Ferdinand on the Beautiful Game Podcast in August.
And Ferdinand knows a thing or two about great defenders.
The Dutch centre-back has brought class and leadership to Liverpool’s backline – but he’s also added a steel and a no-nonsense attitude.
Van Dijk is tall, standing at 6ft 4in. And you rarely see opponents come out on top in a physical battle with him.
When Van Dijk gets angry
A video has now emerged titled ‘When Van Dijk Gets Angry!’ that showcases various instances of the Liverpool man asserting his dominance and proving that he’s not to be messed with.
Man City duo Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have both felt the effects of the tank that is Van Dijk.
But skip to 2:50 if you want to see him send Man United’s Daniel James into next week.
Beast, tank, unit… take your pick of words to describe the 29-year-old.
‘Beast’ was the word of choice for Man United icon Roy Keane when he raved about Van Dijk earlier this year.
“Beast of a player, beast of a man, my goodness what a player,” the Irishman told Sky Sports following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over United in January, via the Liverpool Echo.
Keane continued: “He’s got a good habit of being in the right place at the right time.
“You think of the difference he and the goalkeeper has made since he has come to the club. To me, they were the final pieces.”
Van Dijk is probably a few tiers below Keane in the hardman rankings, but not many come out on top when they clash with the former Southampton defender.
