Video: Roberto Firmino latest star to try control ball fired from cannon at 88mph

Although he has only been at Liverpool for just over a year, Roberto Firmino is already known to possess one of the deftest touches in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s Brazilian forward is usually good for one or two exceptional moments of skills every time he steps out onto the pitch and, more often than not, they leave an opponent more than a little red-faced.

But just how good is Firmino’s touch? That’s what the guys at Dugout tried to find out when they lined up the Brazilian – as well as Anfield teammates Adam Lallana and Nathanial Clyne – and fired footballs at him from a cannon. That’s right, a cannon!

The test – dubbed the ‘Dugout Touch Challenge‘ – involves trying to control a football fired from 40 yards away that is travelling at around 88mph. We’re not even sure Stevie Gerrard long-range special came at his teammates at that pace.

It might sound difficult but Firmino, following a decent effort from Clyne, proved that it was nothing a little South American flair couldn’t handle as he produced a near-perfect touch to kill the ball dead.

The fact that Clyne literally says to the cameras, “I’m not playing anymore” after watching Firmino’s effortless touch pretty much sums it up. If you can’t beat them, stop playing the game.

Liverpool’s own Twitter account were quick to point out that it was no fluke either, as the reminded fans of an even better first touch from the Brazilian against Leicester City earlier this season.

He wasn’t done there, though. Firmino’s next trick? Shelling the high-speed ball off his back and maintaining control…

The Liverpool boys aren’t the only ones to have had a go at the Touch Challenge. Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez produced an effort that rivals that of Firmino’s, whilst former Anfield hero Luis Suarez also had a go.

We’ve got a feeling this could get quite competitive between the world’s very best footballers.

Although Firmino might have the upper hand right now when it comes to off the pitch skills challenges, you know he would swap that in an instant to get an advantage when it comes to the race for the Premier League title.

Liverpool are currently in a good position, just one place and one point behind Chelsea at the top of the table.

However, the news that Philippe Coutinho will face up to six weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury has the potential to ruin a good start from Jurgen Klopp’s men.

It will be up to the likes of Firmino to step up in the absence of his fellow Brazilian if the Merseyside club are to maintain their challenge for the top honours.
