Liverpool fans are abuzz this evening as Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnadlum followed each other on social media app Instagram:
This is the age of the transfer rumor and nothing hots up a rumor like social media buzz. Liverpool midfielder and Virgil van Dijk traded ‘follows’ tonight on Instagram. It looks as if van Dijk was the first to follow, with Gini returning the favor.
This all comes after increased speculation of an imminent transfer for Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool. His club Southampton completed the £15 million signing of Dutch center back Wesley Hoedt from Lazio today. The Saints were quick to play down speculation of Van Dijk leaving by saying they look forward to the pair rekindling their international defensive partnership.
It seems that van Dijk choosing to follow Wijnaldum is a direct counter to those claims. His club are claiming an international connection between two players. Their captain heads to Instagram to connect with a different international colleague. One at the club he wants to join. Fun and games.
This isn’t the first time this summer that Instagram has stirred Liverpool transfer rumors. In July RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita started to follow Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane on the app. This led to a torrent of rumor and speculation. It was part of the player’s maneuvering to engineer a transfer to Anfield.
With the transfer window closing in just over a week every little detail will be under the microscope. The club and it’s most trusted journalists are on radio silence regarding the Dutchman. It is a delicate situation that will have to be played very carefully if Liverpool are to get the result they want.
However, at some point, they are going to have to make an actual bid!
