Arsenal passed on the chance to sign to sign Liverpool forward Sadio Mane before he arrived in the Premier League, according to Generation Foot academy chief Mady Toure.
The Senegal international was a product of the Generation Foot academy in his home nation before leaving for Europe to join Ligue 1 side Metz late in 2011.
In a recent interview, Toure revealed that he spoke with former Arsenal defender, now a senior club scout, Gilles Grimandi about a potential move for the winger, but was knocked back by the Gunners’ representative.
“He replied that he [Mane] was insufficient… like others,” Toure told L’Equipe.
Mane quickly outgrew Metz after his move to Europe and was sold to Red Bull Salzburg where he established himself as an emerging star.
The 24-year-old’s stock grew even quicker at Southampton two seasons later, which prompted Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to pay £34 million for his services last summer.
