The moment Van Dijk gave Mane, scorer of two goals, a dressing down v West Ham

It’s been six years since Liverpool last won a trophy but there’s a feeling amongst the players and fans that that could change this season.

Never before have the Reds been so well-equipped following a summer that saw Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson arrive for £170m.

Jurgen Klopp has a hugely talented squad on his hands and Virgil van Dijk, who joined for £75m in January, believes they’re good enough to end their trophy drought.

“With the players we have and we had already last season we can compete in every competition,” the former Southampton man said last month.

“Hopefully we are going to do something special this year. I don’t like to look too far ahead – we just need to do the talking on the pitch and make sure we perform well.

“Everyone in the squad wants to win something. We know it is going to be a very hard season.”

Liverpool made the perfect start to the new season on Sunday by smashing four past West Ham in a comfortable 4-0 win.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with 20 minutes played before a brace from Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge’s late goal secured all three points.

Mane was undoubtedly Liverpool’s star performer with his two strikes, but that didn’t stop Van Dijk from giving him a dressing down in the second half when he made a mistake.

When the Senegalese switched off and allowed one West Ham’s players to cross into the box, Van Dijk yelled at him: “Stop the f***ing cross.” Check it out in the video below.

Captain material. Van Dijk has become a favourite amongst Liverpool fans, who loved seeing the Dutchman having a go at his teammates.
