The Liverpool legend was impressed with Philippe Coutinho’s cameo performance at Manchester United
Steven Gerrard says Philippe Coutinho looks in incredible shape despite the Liverpool midfielder’s recent return from a long-term ankle injury.
The Brazil international was a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Coutinho was already working his magic within minutes of his introduction after he played a lovely disguised pass to send Roberto Firmino through on goal.
The 24-year-old suffered a serious ankle injury during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Sunderland at Anfield at the end of November.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have some important Premier League games coming up in the next few weeks as Liverpool prepare to host leaders Chelsea at Anfield on 31 January.
Discussing his former Liverpool team-mate on BT Sport ahead of the FA Cup third-round replay at Home Park, Gerrard felt that Coutinho looked sharp in his cameo performance at Old Trafford.
“He is searching for that match fitness. He came off the bench at the weekend and got 30 minutes. He looked incredible. He looked in good shape. He looked like he was nearly there already,” Gerrard said.
Coutinho scored five goals and made five assists before succumbing to injury.
