LIVERPOOL must complete the signing of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk this summer, according to club legend Steven Gerrard.
Van Dijk has been linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the summer transfer window.
The £60m-rated Dutch centre-back has asked Southampton for a transfer but they maintain he will not be sold.
Gerrard reckons to compete in the Premier League and in Europe, Jurgen Klopp needs to improve his defence and Van Dijk is needed.
“Yes (he is a necessity),” Gerrard said on BT Sport of Van Dijk.
“It’s been well documented that we need two or three signings in.”
Van Dijk is yet to play four Southampton this season in their opening two fixtures.
He has not featured for them since January after suffering an ankle injury which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign.
The 26-year-old has been training with the Under-23s throughout pre-season.
Van Dijk has made 55 Premier League appearances for Saints, scoring four times since his arrival from Scottish giants Celtic in 2015.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are unbeaten to date, with a 0-0 draw at home to Swansea backed up by a dramatic 3-2 win over 10-man West Ham yesterday.
