Steve McManaman has lavished praise on Joel Matip for quietly impressing in the Liverpool side following his summer move to Anfield.
The Cameroon international completed a move to the Merseyside outfit in the summer transfer window after Matip agreed a deal to join the Reds from Bundesliga club Schalke 04 at the end of his contract in February.
Matip missed Liverpool’s opening two Premier League games through injury but Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in eight top-flight outings since the African made his league debut at White Hart Lane.
The 24-year-old scored his first Premier League goal at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening as the centre-half netted Liverpool’s third in a 4-2 win against Crystal Palace.
Former Reds skipper McManaman heaped praise on Matip following his free transfer to the Merseyside club in the summer transfer window.
“Joel Matip had another great game. Owen Hargreaves touched on it in commentary. Matip has come on a free transfer,” McManaman told BT Sport after Liverpool’s 4-2 win at Crystal Palace.
“We’re talking about centre-halves being bought for £30-50m. Here is somebody under the radar and coming in way before the summer. He has stepped up to the mark and he has been great. It culminated in a great goal there.”
Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table but level on points with leaders Manchester City.
The Reds will host Watford at Anfield in their next top-flight game next Saturday.
