Paul Merson has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window.
The Liverpool defence has attracted criticism this season after the Merseyside outfit conceded 20 times in 17 games in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
Klopp signed two centre-halves in the summer transfer window after Liverpool brought in Cameroon international Joel Matip and Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan.
The Reds have been linked with a move for Netherlands international Van Dijk, although Saints legend Matt Le Tissier warned Liverpool that the defender could cost up to £50m.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Van Dijk would be a good signing to bolster the Liverpool defence heading into the second half of the season.
“If Liverpool can go and get Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £40m they have got every chance of winning the title because he is the best defender around at the moment,” Merson told The Daily Star.
“But there are so many other teams still in the hunt and such a long way to go, and I think Liverpool have big weaknesses that could prove fatal.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and six points behind current leaders Chelsea in the title race.
The Reds finished in eighth place last term, prompting Klopp to sign seven players in the summer transfer window to bolster his squad.
