Roberto Firmino did something simply outrageous to win Liverpool a penalty v Maribor

Liverpool were expecting a comfortable night at Anfield after thrashing Maribor 7-0 a fortnight ago.

Jurgen Klopp tried his best to ensure everyone that the home tie wouldn’t be as easy as the match in Slovenia and we should have listened.

“I can imagine what people think after results like this and after 7-0 a lot of people wouldn’t respect Maribor,” the Liverpool manager said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“The result was not one per cent of our analysis. Maybe it is a challenge for a lot of people to be 100 per cent spot on but it is my job to ensure we are 100 per cent spot on.

“I had too many football games in my life to feel relaxed before a game like this. It is the Champions League. We decide by our performance whether we stay in the Champions League.”

Klopp was spot on.

Just like it was against Huddersfield on Saturday, Liverpool went into the break being held 0-0.

But also like against the Terriers, the home side soon made their breakthrough after half-time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross was guided home by Mohamed Salah to ease the tension at Anfield.

Then, moments later, Roberto Firmino produced the best moment of the match.

The Brazilian was on the touchline being tightly marked when he pulled off an outrageous Cryuff Turn which nutmegged Aleksander Rajcevic beautifully.

Rajcevic was so embarrassed that he decided to bring Firmino down inside the box to give away a penalty.

It deserved a goal but James Milner couldn’t deliver, seeing his spot-kick tipped onto the post.
