After 26 years without the Premier League title, Liverpool have sometimes found it difficult to keep hold of their star players.
The likes of Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez have all left the club in recent years after the Reds’ inability to land the Premier League.
So, after heavy speculation linking current star Philippe Coutinho with a move to Barcelona, there are, understandably, concerns about the future of the Brazilian.
The midfielder has been in fantastic form this season, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side in their Premier League challenge. Six goals in 13 matches in all competitions for Liverpool – not to mention his fantastic displays for Brazil – has really caught the attention of Barcelona.
Even Barca legend Ronaldinho has admitted the Camp Nou club are interested in him by saying that they have “a lot of admiration” for Liverpool’s number 10.
LIVERPOOL CONFIDENT OF KEEPING COUTINHO
However, according to the Telegraph, there are several reasons why Liverpool are confident of keeping Coutinho amid Barcelona interest.
Coutinho may state that the lure of Champions League is tempting him to Barcelona. Despite having no European football this season, the Anfield club are odds-on to qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season via their league position.
The 24-year-old may also point at money. He isn’t Liverpool’s current highest earner – although that will surely change when he’s offered a new deal. Liverpool are playing in the richest league in the world and can compete with Europe’s biggest clubs when it comes to wages.
But, perhaps the most important aspect of trying to keep Coutinho is the vision of the club. Klopp will need to convince their star man that he could be the main man as the club attempt to break their long title drought. Being the key player in Liverpool’s 19th – and most important league title victory – will surely mean more to the player than the 25th or 26th title win at Barcelona.
He would be remembered for decades if he helped Liverpool win the title. If he moved to Barcelona, he would be just another star in an incredible side.
Of course, playing alongside the best players in the world in one of the best clubs in the world has its appeal. However, even if Barcelona are deadly serious about signing Coutinho next summer, if seems Liverpool hold plenty of cards in order to keep him.
Klopp will be key in trying to convince him to stay on Merseyside and he’s confident he can do so. Whether he manages it remains to be seen.
