Former Newcastle United striker Micky Quinn believes that signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton could help Liverpool to win the Premier League this season.
Van Dijk has been excellent for Southampton over the past couple of campaigns and has been linked with a switch to Anfield, as reported by the Daily Star.
It isn’t currently clear whether a move will come to fruition but Quinn has urged Liverpool to do all they can to complete a deal.
Quinn told talkSPORT: “I think he could be the missing link for Liverpool in regards to winning the Premier League. I think if they sign him – you’ve seen him at Celtic, at Southampton- he’s an aggressive centre-back. He just goes from strength to strength every game I see him.
“I think he would be a great signing for Liverpool – money’s no object. I could see them win the Premier League if they sign him.”
An excellent reader of the game who is calm in possession, van Dijk has averaged ten defensive actions per game in the Premier League this season.
Liverpool have played some excellent dynamic, free-flowing football so far this term but they remain rather vulnerable defensively and the acquisition of Van Dijk, who has an average pass accuracy of 84% in the Premier League this campaign, would surely help to significantly improve matters in that regard.
A partnership of van Dijk and Joel Matip, with the latter having impressed since his move from Schalke, is a tantalising possibility and could give Liverpool the edge in what is likely to be a fiercely competitive race for the title.
Liverpool, who are currently in second place in the Premier League table, were frustrated by van Dijk’s Southampton in a goalless draw last weekend but will hope to return to winning ways when they host Sunderland on Saturday.
