Alberto Moreno is closing in on a move to Lazio from Liverpool with the Serie A side confident of securing his services on a pre-contract deal.
The 26-year-old’s existing contract with Liverpool is set to expire in the summer and after playing just five times for the first-team in all competitions this season, he will be allowed to move on in search of more regular first-team football elsewhere.
Expectations were high when Moreno completed a £12m move to Liverpool from Sevilla in 2014, however, he faded after a bright start and after making numerous defensive errors during his first couple of seasons, he has largely played a backup role under Jurgen Klopp.
Midfielder James Milner took his first-team slot in the 2016-17 season after Moreno had committed two costly mistakes in Liverpool’s Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, while Andrew Robertson has been the first-choice since joining from Hull City in 2017.
Moreno has been linked with numerous clubs on the continent in recent weeks including Roma, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid, but it appears as though Lazio have won the race to sign him on a free transfer.
The left-back was in Rome on Tuesday and met up with former Liverpool teammate Lucas Leiva who currently plays for Lazio.
Luis Alberto, who spent the 2013-14 season with Liverpool, is also a key member of the Lazio squad.
Moreno has played just twice in the Premier League this season with his last appearance coming in the 3-1 win over Burnley in December.
