PHIL THOMPSON has urged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to sign either Michael Keane or Virgil van Dijk this summer.
Liverpool have a good chance to secure the place in top-four, as they came from behind to beat Stoke City and stay on course for a top-four finish thanks to goals by substitutes Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have let in 40 goals this term, have seen their title hopes undermined by their defensive efforts.
And Reds’ legend Thompson wants Klopp to strengthen his defence in the summer, with Burnley’s Keane and Southampton’s Van Dijk ideal reinforcements.
“I still think we need another centre-back and a left-back to really challenge,” he told Sky Sports.
“Offensively we can match most sides out there but it’s no use if we keep conceding as many as we have done.
“Michael Keane and Virgil van Dijk are the two potential options I’d be looking at.
“But there’s going to be a lot of teams looking for centre-backs, including both Manchester clubs and possibly Arsenal, so you’ve got to make moves early.
“Mamadou Sakho would be a good bargaining tool to help get those targets in as he’s doing himself no harm while on loan at Crystal Palace.”
