Liverpool need to make three signings in the summer transfer window to overhaul champions Chelsea next season, according to Paul Merson.
The Reds secured a long-awaited return to the Champions League on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-0 win against relegated Middlesbrough at Anfield.
Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana secured the required three points to ensure Liverpool finished ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table.
Manager Jurgen Klopp signed seven players in the 2016 summer transfer window after the German coach took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
However, the Liverpool boss had to cope with a depleted squad in the closing months of the season as Liverpool limped over the finish line in the top-four race.
Speaking to Sky Sports about where Liverpool need to improve to overhaul champions Chelsea next season, former Arsenal midfielder Merson said:
“They will need a full-back firstly. I think James Milner has been great but he’s not a full-back for me and they’ll have the Champions League to deal with.
“I think they need another centre-half unless they bite the bullet with Mamadou Sakho and bring him back because he’s been outstanding for Palace.
“Then they probably need a centre-forward in my opinion, somebody who is going to be a physical presence and hold the ball up and be a focal point. They’ve got talent behind but they need that sort of player up front for me.”
Liverpool won the Champions League thanks to a penalty shootout victory over AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005 before losing to the Serie A giants in Athens in 2007.
