Mo Salah mocked on social media for missing late chance against Barcelona

When Mohamed Salah was scoring goals left, right and centre for Liverpool last season, some people dared to suggest the Egyptian forward was on the same level as Lionel Messi.

Jurgen Klopp stopped short of agreeing with that assessment – but only just.

“I think Mo is on the way,” the Liverpool boss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports last March, regarding the comparisons with Messi. “I don’t think Mo or anybody else wants to be compared with Lionel Messi – he is the one who has been doing what he’s been doing for what feels like 20 years or so. The last player I know who had the same influence on a team performance was Diego Maradona.”

People used to say that no player should be compared to Maradona until Messi came along.

But no player deserves to be compared to Messi. It’s just not fair on them. We’ll probably never see a player like him this century.

After scoring his free-kick, Salah was presented with a glorious opportunity to net a potentially invaluable away goal for the Reds – but he fluffed his lines.

The ball fell to last season’s PFA Premier League Player of the Year but he could only find the near post – albeit on his unfavoured right foot – from six yards.

Had he scored, it would have given Liverpool real hope ahead of next week’s second leg at Anfield.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, football fans on social media reacted to Salah’s miss in rather cruel fashion.

You might remember Liverpool fans tweeting something along the lines of ‘How am I going to tell my grandchildren that Salah scored from this position’ after one particular goal against Watford last season.

Here’s an example…

Well, non-Liverpool supporters have got their revenge by posting a series of tweets wondering how the Anfield faithful will tell their children and grandchildren how Salah managed to miss from inside the six-yard box at Camp Nou.

Here are just a handful of tweets…
