Manager comments over possible move for £30m Liverpool player

Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer has admitted that he is unsure whether the Eagles will sign Mamadou Sakho.

The French defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park and was a key figure in the London club avoiding relegation – but there are doubts about him joining permanently this summer.

Sakho appears to have no future at Anfield but Liverpool are said to want £30 million for the centre-back, which could be an issue for Palace.

There are still a lack of options at the heart of the defence for the Dutchman heading into the campaign, even allowing for the addition to the squad of Jairo Riedewald.

James Tomkins, Scott Dann and Damien Delaney are all in the reckoning for that position at Selhurst Park while Martin Kelly, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Joel Ward can also step in if required but someone of the quality of Sakho would significantly strengthen them.

When quizzed over the situation, De Boer was not certain a deal would materialise.

“I don’t know,” Sky Sports quote the Palace boss as saying.

“He was a major impact last season, everybody knows what he did. He was not only good on the pitch but also in the dressing room.

“If you can get that kind of quality of player it always benefits your team.”

Despite a lack of bodies in the heart of the defence, De Boer is expected to lead Palace up the table this season and has added Ruben Loftus-Cheek along with Fosu-Mensah to his squad to help with that aim.

The former Ajax boss is reportedly looking for another goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window too but it appears a deal for the Liverpool defender is unlikely at this stage.

Palace’s leaky defence was on show in Saturday’s opening Premier League fixture against Huddersfield Town – reiterating the fact that Sakho would be a massively valuable addition.

The French centre-half was imperious at times last term in the Eagles rearguard and played a critical role in the Selhurst Park side’s revival in the second half of the season.
