With a summer of change expected to take place at Pride Park this summer, its no surprise to see the Rams already being linked with potential moves for players. Derby County have been disappointing this season after missing out on the play-offs, but the future is looking bright under new boss, Gary Rowett.
One player the Rams have already been linked with is 23-year-old Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom. The former England U21 international has spent the last season on loan at Austrian Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg, and according to a report in the Liverpool Echo, the defender is a top target for Derby County.
And when asked about the potential of signing Wisdom, Rowett told the Derby Telegraph that the defender was the “type of player” Derby would be interested in, though not at the price suggested.
Rowett added: “He is athletic, strong and has potential to play in the Premier League – so he is the type of player we are interested in.”
“Certainly the values that they were talking would be more than we would be looking at, at the moment.”
Wisdom spent part of the 2013-14 season on loan at Derby County, helping the Rams reach the play-off final during Steve McClaren’s first tenure at the club.
The defender made 38 appearances for the Rams, and can fill a role both at right-back and at centre-back. Considering Derby County’s defensive problems this season, it’s no surprise to see the likes of Wisdom being linked with a move.
However, manager Gary Rowett has thrown caution to the wind, reminding fans that the transfer season can lead to a lot of speculation:
“What you will find over the next six or seven weeks is there will be speculation on hundreds of players.
“We normally try to do our dealings quietly and privately. If we can get them done, great. If we can’t and it all gets out in the media and values get inflated, they might be deals that we just leave alone.”
