Cameroon boss Hugo Broos has aimed a dig at Liverpool defender Joel Matip after his nation’s victory in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.
For the first time in 15 years, Cameroon are champions of Africa but were required to come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Egypt.
Matip was one of eight players who opted not to be part of Cameroon’s squad for AFCON, and Broos believes the 25-year-old will now be ruing his decision.
‘There was a lot of trouble before, players who wouldn’t come with us,’ said Broos.
‘OK, it’s their decision. But maybe they are saying now to themselves, ‘S***! Why didn’t I go with them?’
“We came here and I think nobody thought we would go so far.”
The 25-year-old Liverpool star last played for his country in an AFCON qualifier in September 2015 and rejected a call-up to Broos’ squad for the tournament in Gabon.
He is understood to be adamant that his position will not change despite his country’s success.
The former Schalke centre-back was one of seven players to pull out of the provisional 35-man squad. Others included West Brom’s Allan Nyom.
