The Brazilian’s free-kick saw the Blues open the scoring in the 24th minute at Anfield, but it was not enough to secure a win as Georginio Wijnaldum would ultimately equalise.
Luiz caught the Liverpool gloveman off guard with the set-piece, as his compatriot Willian seemed likely to strike the ball.
“It’s been a long time! Sometimes you need to try the surprise. I saw he was not in position so I tried to surprise him,” he said to the club’s official website.
“Sometimes in the game you need to feel the game and see the opportunity. I was happy because I did well.”
The goal was his first since returning for a second stint with the Blues. Mignolet was still setting up his wall for the free-kick, but referee Mark Clattenburg did blow his whistle for it to be taken.
The result saw Jurgen Klopp’s men snap a run off three straight defeats on their home soil, while Chelsea are now nine points clear at the top of the table.
