According to a report from the Daily Mail, Liverpool are now demanding £25million from anyone interested in signing defender Mamadou Sakho this summer.
The question is: If Reds manager Jurgen Klopp rates the Frenchman so highly, why on earth doesn’t he just play him?
It is a question Liverpool fans have been asking all season, with the former Paris Saint-Germain player excelling since ending his Anfield exile with a loan move to Crystal Palace.
Sakho has transformed the Eagles’ back line, and when you consider how poor Liverpool’s own defence has been for much of the season – with Lucas Leiva played out of position until Klopp belatedly realised the error of his ways – it makes absolutely no sense why the gaffer would be a self-saboteur regardless of his personal relationship with the 27-year-old.
Questions remain regarding the quality of Dejan Lovren, but those same questions have long been answered when it comes to Sakho, and it is telling that Liverpool reportedly believe they can now get £25million for a player who sat twiddling his thumbs until late January.
Liverpool need to improve their defence next season, so why not just add a £25million-rated defender they already have, rather than selling him and taking a risk elsewhere?
