Liverpool urged to sign world-class No.4 with £25m release clause

Ian Wright has urged Liverpool to pounce on Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld – to help out his old team Arsenal.

The Belgian centre-back has put Europe’s top clubs on red alert with a contract dispute at Spurs that, if unresolved, could see him become available to sign during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have inevitably edged their way into conversation regarding potential suitors, as far as tenuous reports are concerned, with Jurgen Klopp potentially set to strengthen his defence again.

This has teased a tantalising potential centre-back duo of £75million signing Virgil van Dijk and a man deemed one of world football’s most accomplished defenders.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, Wright said: “I can’t wait to see Liverpool’s business in the summer. I am so excited about that.”

“They’ve got to get a goalkeeper. They need another centre-half. Get Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham so they can weaken them and Arsenal can do a little bit more against them!”

Alderweireld’s current contract has a £25million release clause that can be activated in summer 2019, fuelling rumours he could leave at the end of the season.

That said, there will be an undoubted reluctance on Tottenham’s part to let him go without a fight given the prospect of the 29-year-old strengthening a close rival.

Besides proving a stern match for the Premier League’s elite forwards, the former Southampton man has built a reputation for himself as an exquisite distributor of the ball.

If he does fall onto the market, targeting him is a no-brainer in aid of not only finding a proven partner for Van Dijk but also giving Joe Gomez another valuable mentor.

The 20-year-old is expected to eventually make the transition into a central defensive role at Anfield, although it remains to be seen how Klopp plans on handling the Englishman next season.
