Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to go head-to-head for the signature of rising German star Max Meyer, according to various reports in Europe.
The £38m-rated Meyer is currently one of the most highly rated youngsters in European football with his exploits for Schalke 04 earning him a name as one of Germany’s biggest prospects. The 21-year-old has already notched up an impressive 100 appearances in Bundesliga. He has also won three caps for the national team, scoring one goal.
According to French website Le10 Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jurgen Klopp has been a “huge fan” of his compatriot ever since his time as the Borussia Dortmund manager. The report also went on to add that the Liverpool boss is “willing to do anything to convince him to sign for Liverpool.”
Klopp has been known to have a knack of working with and developing young talents throughout his years as the manager of Mainz, Dortmund and now Liverpool. Given the promise Meyer has shown for his club as a creative outlet, it’s no wonder that the Liverpool manager is keen on bringing the midfielder to Anfield.
Liverpool aren’t the only Premier League outfit monitoring the progress of Meyer, though. SportBild (h/t London Evening Standard) reported Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the German, as quoted by the midfielder himself.
Revealing Spurs’ interest in him, Meyer said: “I know that there was interest and the club was asked, but Schalke immediately put a stop to it. So the matter was settled. Of course I’ve dealt with it. I know what I have at Schalke and I like to play for this club. When the time comes, we’ll come to a decision. But I feel good about Schalke.”
Meyer has two years left on his current contract with Schalke, but has previously admitted that he “would like to move to England” if the right club came calling. It goes without saying that he would add a distinct creative boost to the respective sides, if either of the two clubs do decide to make the move for the German talent in the near future.
