Liverpool tipped to sign 6 ft 4 Premier League star in January

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Liverpool should make another attempt to try and sign Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window.

The Reds were heavily linked with a move to bring the Dutch defender to Anfield during the summer transfer market.

Van Dijk was thought to be close to making a move to Anfield but the Reds were forced to withdraw their interest in the player and issue a public apology after they were accused of an alleged illegal approach by Southampton.

The defender handed in a transfer request but Southampton refused to sell him before the transfer deadline.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will return with a fresh attempt to try and sign Van Dijk in January.

But after Liverpool conceded seven goals in their last two games, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand has suggested that the Reds should make a new move for the Netherlands international.

Ferdinand told BT Sport on Wednesday night: “There needs to be a leader in there. That’s why he went so hard for Van Dijk.

“They need more protection in there.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they host Burnley at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after their 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City last weekend at The Etihad.
