Liverpool can be happy with picking up a point against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, Joel Matip has insisted.
The Reds produced yet another dominant performance but ultimately couldn’t overcome Claude Puel’s well drilled team. Roberto Firmino, among others, will be wondering how he failed to be the match winner after letting a golden opportunity go to waste.
However, Matip has stressed that his side can look back on the goalless draw at St Mary’s with plenty of positives.
The former Schalke man said, as reported by the club’s official website: “[It’s] a point away at a good team. We had a few chances but we can’t always score three or four goals.
“It’s okay; one point at Southampton,
“For a defender it’s always good to have a clean sheet and not to concede a goal but we always want to win.”
Matip has earned himself an abundance of plaudits for his displays since joining the Premier League, as he has invariably brought added security and composure to the heart of Liverpool’s back line.
Jurgen Klopp will be enthused by the manner in which his side maintained the style of football that has seen them blow teams away over the course of this season, but will be delighted with the fact that his team managed to shut the Saints out.
Liverpool’s clean sheet yesterday was their first since the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, and only their fourth of the campaign across all competitions.
Klopp’s side did allow Chelsea to leapfrog them into pole position following yesterday’s draw, but there are many positives for the German to take from the first quarter of the season as Liverpool seek domestic silverware.
