Liverpool have opened talks to sign Andre Gomes from Barcelona this summer, according to reports in Italy.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for a new central midfielder as they face the prospect of losing Emre Can on a free transfer when the Germany international’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Liverpool have been linked with several different options, including Napoli’s Jorginho and Nice’s Jean Michael Seri. But Tuttosport report that Klopp has identified Gomes, who is wanted by AC Milan, as Can’s replacement at Anfield.
The report also claims that Liverpool have already held talks with Gomes’ entourage about a possible transfer this summer.
Gomes has struggled for playing time since moving from Valencia in the summer of 2016 and Barcelona are looking to offload the midfielder at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old has only started eight games in all competitions this season and was even booed by Barcelona fans during a match against Atletico Madrid this season.
‘I don’t feel good on the pitch and I am not enjoying what I am doing’ Gomes told Spanish magazine Panenka earlier this month.
‘Maybe it’s not the right word to use, but it has turned into a kind of hell because I have started to feel more pressure. With pressure, I feel fine, but with the pressure [I put] on myself, I don’t. The feeling that I have during games is bad.’
