German international Max Meyer has come on to Liverpool’s transfer radar after rejecting a contract offer from current club Schalke.
ESPN are reporting that Liverpool retain an interest in German international midfielder Max Meyer. The £17.5m-rated Schalke playmaker has rejected a new contract offer from the club opening the door for a summer transfer. Tottenham are leading the pursuit but Jurgen Klopp’s strong Bundesliga connections have also put us in the picture.
Meyer is unhappy with the lack of progress his club are making. The Gelsenkirchen side had a dispiriting 10th place finish in the Bundesliga. They had finished 5th in 2015/16 and Meyer was hoping they would kick on towards Champions League qualification this season. Instead the club sunk and Meyer’s for dipped with it.
After a career year in 2015/16 with 5 goals and 6 assists he only managed a single goal and assist this term. With the World Cup coming next summer there is pressure to move. He wants to be playing Champions League football in order to impress German manager Joachim Low. A good season at a leading Premier League club would surely put him in the picture for the World Cup favorites.
A combination of adding Mohamed Salah, the ongoing pursuit of Naby Keita and strong rumors around Oxlade-Chamberlain make this transfer unlikely. We now have a full supply of creative midfielders. A move for the German would only happen if a player was to leave. However the solid interest in Kylain Mbappe proves Liverpool will move if a good opportunity presents itself. Yet do we think Maximilian Meyer is a unmissable opportunity? No, he is more promise than productivity right now. We can concentrate on areas of greater need.
