Liverpool Lead the Race For £40m-Rated Ligue 1 Winner

Liverpool’s chances of signing Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy have been handed a huge boost after contract talks between the Frenchman and Manchester City have stalled.

A host of Premier League clubs have been keeping tabs on the £40m-rated defender after appearing regularly in Monaco’s title-winning campaign last term.

The promising youngster also helped his side to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League before defeat to Juventus ended Monaco’s chances of landing a cup double.

The Liverpool Echo reported that Manchester City were frontrunners to sign the France international, but talks have broken down which has provided Liverpool with increased hopes of signing Mendy.

Jurgen Klopp is preparing to make a number of big money signings this summer as the Reds prepare for a return to the Champions League. Klopp has identified several positions which he wishes to strengthen over the summer and the left-back spot is one of them.

James Milner successfully slotted in there last season, but the Liverpool boss is seeking reinforcements to enable his side to battle on multiples fronts next season.

However, Liverpool will face tough competition for the 22-year-old’s signature as Premier League rivals Chelsea are also in the hunt. In similar circumstances to the Reds, Chelsea are also looking to add to their squad next season to cope with the demands of a heavier fixture schedule.

Mendy made his international debut in March of this year and has been capped four times by Les Bleus. The defender moved to Monaco from fellow Ligue 1 side Marseille on a five-year deal before the start of last season.
