Liverpool have expressed their interest in signing Augsburg’s goalkeeper Marwin Hitz this summer, according German newspaper BILD.
The Swiss international goalkeeper was also subject to interest from the Anfield club in March 2016, with manager Jurgen Klopp being a long term admirer of the experienced shot-stopper.
Klopp is looking to make signings this summer to ensure that Liverpool challenge in all competitions next season and it is no secret that the German has been looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department for some time.
Questions have been regularly asked over current goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, although the Belgian did have a strong finish to the season as Liverpool secured a Champions League spot.
However, with Hitz only having 12 months remaining on his current contract at Bundesliga club Augsburg, he could be signed for a cheap price. Reports suggest that the German club are content with cashing in on the goalkeeper this summer rather than to see him leave on a free transfer next summer.
Hitz’ situation is being closely monitored by the Merseyside club as well as Bundesliga club Schalke. Hitz, 29, wants to be the number one choice goalkeeper and will not join Liverpool to be a second option.
Hitz has kept 38 clean sheets in 124 appearances for Augsburg and could well be on his way out of the club this summer.
In truth, it’s highly unlikely that Liverpool look to buy a replacement for Mignolet this season and if a goalkeeper does come in, it’ll be as a number three. Alex Manninger has decided to retire so if Liverpool want to loan out either Danny Ward or Loris Karius, they may look to bring in a veteran as third choice.
