Liverpool icon’s fantastic achievement could be soon eclipsed

Bob Paisley and the European Cup will be forever linked.

He was the first manager to win the trophy – now the Champions League – three times, all of which came with Liverpool, and only Carlo Ancelotti has matched the achievement following triumphs with Milan and Real Madrid.

However, the Bayern Munich manager is on course to win the trophy for the fourth time and break the record he shares with Paisley, but will have to overcome Real first when they meet in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ancelotti’s European triumphs (as manager)

2003: Juventus 0-0 Milan (Milan won on penalties at Old Trafford)
2007: Milan 2-1 Liverpool (Olympic Stadium, Athens)
2014: Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid (Estadio da Luz, Lisbon)

Paisley’s European triumphs

1977: Liverpool 3-1 Borussia Monchengladbach (Stadio Olympico, Rome)
1978: Liverpool 1-0 Club Brugge (Wembley Stadium, London)
1981: Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid (Parc des Princes, Paris)

Will Ancelotti make it four Champions League wins as a manager?
