LIVERPOOL legend Sami Hyypia knows a thing or two about defending.
And the former Reds star is a huge fan of summer signing Joel Matip.
The 25-year-old has been a revelation since Jurgen Klopp snapped him up on a free transfer in July.
Matip will be hoping to keep that 14-game unbeaten streak going when Liverpool travel to Middlesbrough tonight.
And, speaking ahead of the clash, Hyypia has opened up on what he believes has made the centre-back so integral to Klopp’s side.
He told Liverpool’s official website: “I knew him from Germany, I think I played against him and then managed Leverkusen when he was at Schalke.
“He’s a good player. He’s a big guy, dominant player, very comfortable on the ball and that’s a big piece of how the team plays.
“When you want to play football, you need to have somebody who is comfortable on the ball and on the other hand a strong defender.
“His style of play is that he is comfortable on the ball but I think that comes from confidence, he is very confident that he can play football.”
And many supporters will be hoping Matip can do the same.
The new boy has been compared to the big Finn.
But Hyypia says there is one key area where their respective games differ.
“If you want to see similarities, I think there are some – but I think he’s a bit quicker than me!” he added.
Liverpool travel to the Riverside Stadium third in the Premier League, six points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
