Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted Sadio Mane will cut short his summer holidays in a bid to make the start of the Reds’ Premier League season.
The winger has been with Senegal in Eygpt for the Africa Cup of Nations and played a full 90 minutes as his side lost 1-0 to Algeria in Sunday’s final.
The former Southampton man is entitled to a full three weeks off to recover after a gruelling club season which culminated in Champions League success in early June.
However, after a 2-1 defeat to Boston on Sunday, Klopp confirmed that Mane would the day after the Community Shield against Manchester City and could feature a week later in the opener against Norwich.
‘We now know Sadio will be back on the fifth (of August) and we can prepare the Norwich game as well,’ said Klopp.
‘The boys are getting fitter and fitter. And the boys who come back should be fit, it’s a really short break. Then we have to work together.
‘It’s rare you play your best football on the first matchday but you want to have results.
‘We are missing six to eight players in Boston. I’m not concerned but I know about the situation.’
Liverpool’s defeat to Sevilla was marred by a tackle from Joris Gnagnon which left Reds ace Yasser Larouci requiring crutches after the match.
The defender has since apologised for the incident, describing his challenge as ‘heinous’.
