Adam Bogdan is set to return to Liverpool after tearing the ACL in his right knee, likely ending his season-long loan with Wigan Athletic.
The Hungarian goalkeeper joined the Latics for the campaign back in July, and had made 17 appearances for his loan club, playing every minute of his first 16 outings.
But his consistent run came to an end in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Barnsley, as he caught his knee landing in the penalty area.
Bogdan was stretchered off the field at Oakwell Stadium, though his injury was initially not feared to be too serious, with his fall an innocuous one.
However, taking to Instagram on Monday evening, Bogdan revealed that the results of a scan had confirmed the worst, with the 29-year-old suffering an ACL tear in his right knee.
“I have just received the result of my MRI scan which showed that I tore my ACL in my right knee,” he told his 147,000 followers.
“So it will be a lengthy recovery. I am sure I will return stronger!”
This comes as a major disappointment for Bogdan, with an ACL injury typically spelling the end of a player’s season, as with Reds centre-back Joe Gomez in October of last year.
Danny Ings also suffered a similar injury at the same time, but returned to make his first appearance under Jurgen Klopp on the last day of the Premier League campaign in 2015/16.
Bogdan’s recovery could be an isolating one, with no place for the former Bolton Wanderers stopper in Klopp’s first-team squad in the future.
Klopp moved to signed Loris Karius from Mainz 05 in the summer, installing the young German as his new No. 1 goalkeeper, with Simon Mignolet as deputy and another new signing, Alex Manninger, serving as experienced backup.
Beyond this, Danny Ward‘s loan move to Huddersfield Town was preceded by the signing of a new long-term contract, and the Wales international looks set to vie with Karius in the future.
Ryan Fulton, Kamil Grabara, Caoimhin Kelleher and Shamal George are also options for the long term, leaving Bogdan far down the pecking order.
If his loan spell with Wigan is over, however, and Bogdan returns to Melwood for treatment, he will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness and, likely, earn a move away.
