Liverpool goalkeeper Karius SLAMMED

The Reds stopper came under criticism for a poorly placed kick-out against Sunderland, with one pundit now calling for him to be dropped by Jurgen Klopp

Former Manchester United midfielder Eamon Dunphy has criticised Liverpool’s Loris Karius, despite the German goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet against Sunderland.

The 23-year-old has been Jurgen Klopp’s first choice between the posts this season, but Dunphy has called upon him to be dropped after a poorly placed goal-kick resulted in a corner during the Reds’ win over the Black Cats.

Belgium goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was error-prone during Klopp’s first season in charge at Anfield, and played just five games this season before being deposed by Karius as the first choice.

Dunphy pointed to the calamatious goal-kick as proof of Karius’s underperforming, stating that Klopp should restore Mignolet to the starting role.

“That [the goal kick] was really weird and that’s a problem for Liverpool,” Dunphy told RTE.

“I know Klopp likes him but Liverpool fans will agree with me, ‘bring back Mignolet’ is my slogan for November.”

The ex-Republic of Ireland international previously criticised Liverpool’s defence, singling out Karius for further backlash despite a strong start to the season at Anfield.

“There is a problem with the Liverpool team and it isn’t in attacking, it is their defence and a new goalkeeper who doesn’t look great. You won’t win the Premier League with a dodgy defence,” he told RTE in early November.

“I hope he [Klopp] does something with his defence but he is going to have to buy a top class central defender at least and maybe a goalkeeper in the window in January.”
