Jurgen Klopp’s men were beaten by Swansea in the league, by Southampton in the League Cup, and by Wolves in the FA Cup in the ten days leading up to the visit of Antonio Conte’s Blues, and it looked set to be four losses on the spin when David Luiz fired home a free-kick in the first half.
However, the Reds responded with a much-improved second half display, in which Georginio Wijnaldum headed home an equaliser to secure a point for the hosts, but they remain ten points behind Chelsea with just 15 games to go.
Nonetheless, it was a big point for Liverpool after a sluggish start to 2017, which has seen them win just one of their nine games since the turn of the year, and indeed bow out of both cup competitions.
Many felt that this wretched run of form would instigate some transfer activity from Klopp and co in a bid to bridge the gap between themselves and Chelsea, yet, despite being linked to many high-profile players, there were no incomings at Anfield last month.
