Liverpool fans can’t understand how Everton’s Ross Barkley hasn’t been sent off

The Merseyside derby is known for its crunching tackles.

It’s one of the reasons Premier League sides love watching Liverpool square up against Everton.

However, as much as we all love a bit of Merseyside madness, there has to be a limit.

Referee Anthony Taylor was always going to have a difficult afternoon in store, and to his credit, he tried not to disrupt the game too much.

When he looks back at footage of Ross Barkley’s challenge on Dejan Lovren, though, he’ll be left with a face as red as Liverpool’s jersey.

Sadio Mane had put Liverpool 1-0 up in the eighth minute before Matthew Pennington, making his first start of the season, levelled things up for the visitors.

A brilliant goal by Philippe Coutinho then put the Reds 2-1 up just three minutes later.

These are the things we would love to be talking about. Unfortunately, though, the fact that Barkley stayed on the pitch means his awful tackle is going to be in the spotlight even more.

Many fans took to Twitter to express their anger:
