When Dejan Lovren gave an emotional interview this week, Liverpool fans were left fearing the worst.
The much-criticised defender has experienced some tough moments since arriving at Anfield – including this campaign where he’s been dropped for his poor form.
But after the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, Lovren had started performing well alongside him.
So when he gave an honest and frank interview with the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool supporters knew exactly what was coming – a poor performance against Manchester United.
It’s something that has happened on numerous occasions before. Lovren having a few good games, giving a big interview, only to have a nightmare match immediately afterward.
And it happened again at Old Trafford.
Lovren was bulled twice in the space of 10 minutes by Romelu Lukaku, resulting in United taking a 2-0 lead after just 24 minutes thanks to a brace from Marcus Rashford.
It was a deficit that Liverpool couldn’t come back from, despite pulling a goal back in the second-half thanks to Eric Bailly’s own-goal.
And Liverpool fans were blaming the fact that Lovren had given an interview in the days before the game as a result of his nightmare performance.
LIVERPOOL FANS REACT
Check out the reaction from Liverpool fans:
Welcome to the wonderful continuous cycle of Dejan Lovren.
Bottles a big game gets slated.
Improves and works his way into the team.
Does an interview in the press talking about what a decent player he is.
Bottles a big game again.#MUNLIV— Jacob Larkman (@jacob_larkman) March 10, 2018

Lovren needs to stay away from interviews. Everytime he gives one, he has a shitter the next game.

I can give you 10 examples of Lovren giving and interview then performing like this the very next match. He's abysmal
