There was no doubt about it, Liverpool needed a win against Huddersfield.
Following their 4-3 victory against Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp’s side lost to Swansea in the league before crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of West Brom.
Another loss to Huddersfield and Klopp would have some serious questions to answer to.
But the German boss didn’t have to answer any questions about Liverpool’s form after the match after an extremely comfortable 3-0 victory.
And when we say comfortable, we mean it in every sense of the word.
Klopp actually sprang a surprise when naming his starting line-up by leaving £75 million signing Virgil van Dijk on the bench. Instead, Liverpool lined up with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip at the heart of their defence.
But the pair had very little to do with the away side having 75% possession and completing an astonishing 911 passes – compared to Huddersfield’s 307.
JOEL MATIP BREAKS PASSING RECORD
And there was one Liverpool player that made more passes than anyone else – Matip.
In fact, the Cameroonian attempted 161 passes during the 3-0 win, creating history in the meantime.
That’s because that is the most amount of passes attempted by a Liverpool player in a match in Premier League history.

Out of those 161 passes, Matip completed 154 of them.
In fact, Huddersfield completed just six more passes than Matip and Lovren together.
LIVERPOOL FANS REACT TO MATIP’S RECORD
This is how Liverpool fans reacted to Matip breaking the club record:
Okay so here's the thing, Matip completed 161 passes tonight which is more than any other Liverpool player in Premier League history, we've been keeping a lot of clean sheets with Lovren in the side lately and Van Dijk is a beast so dare I say 3 at the back? 😂 #HUDLIV

161 passes by Matip and 26 of them being long passes today show why Klopp signed Matip and no other CB back in 2016. He provides what Klopp needs. #HUDLIV
