Liverpool fans are livid at the reason Lyon ended negotiations for Nabil Fekir [RMC]

What once looked and sounded like a dream signing has turned into a nightmare for Liverpool.

Despite agreeing terms with Lyon, carrying out a medical and conducting an interview in recent days, the Reds are not going to be signing Nabil Fekir.

Lyon have released a statement – which you can read by clicking here – confirming Fekir will be staying in France having put an end to negotiations this evening.

Losing out on the 24-year-old will come as a huge blow to Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp, who must have thought he was about to sign a replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

It means that for now, Liverpool will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

But there’s a big question that needs answering here: what could have possibly happened in the last 24 hours to make Lyon pull the plug at such an advanced stage?

A fee of £53m had been agreed, while Fekir has previously told his club that he only wanted to join Liverpool.

So what’s going on? According to reliable French source RMC Sport, as confirmed by the Mirror, it’s something Liverpool did that ended negotiations so suddenly.

Loic Tanzi explains in the tweet below that Liverpool tried to reduce the agreed transfer fee of £53m due to concerns about Fekir’s history of injuries.

A few red flags were raised during Fekir’s medical, so the Reds thought they would be able to negotiate a lower fee – but their attempts failed miserably.

Tamzi’s tweet reads in English: “Liverpool had to try to lower the price of the transfer following the medical.”

Unbelievable. Liverpool had Lyon right where they wanted them, but they went a step too far by trying to renegotiate and now Fekir’s move isn’t happening.

And as you can imagine, Liverpool fans are absolutely raging. Talks will resume after the World Cup but it’s still an unnecessary and frustrating setback.
