Loris Karius has endured a nightmare summer.
The 25-year-old German goalkeeper replaced Simon Migolet as Liverpool’s number one midway through the 2017/18 season.
And Karius had cemented his spot as Liverpool’s first-choice ‘keeper by the end of the season.
But then disaster struck in the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
The former Gladbach stopper made two horrendous mistakes to gift goals to Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale.
Karius returned for pre-season in July but his performances in Liverpool’s friendly matches have been littered with mistakes.
Jurgen Klopp reacted last week by splashing out a record-breaking £67m on Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Karius has received plenty of abuse on social media over the summer and he’s not the first Liverpool player to suffer this kind of treatment.
Croatian defender Dejan Lovren has previously been the target of online trolls following disappointing performances in a Liverpool shirt.
After the 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Borussia Dortmund, Karius was slammed by ‘anfieldclub._’ on Instagram.
Thank god we've got @alissonbecker😳🙏 It's becoming a regular thing for @lorisk21 😑😤. I seriously believe that we should sell him because even as a backup he's just full of mistakes. I don't care what anyone says but he is not worthy of wearing the LFC shirt😡 And this is for all the mistakes he makes in general for the ones thinking that I'm slaughtering him just for this… – #LFC #Liverpool #Anfield #Melwood #YNWA #lfcfamily #hollerlfc #lovelfc #LiverpoolFC #Redmen #Klopp #Gerrard #Firmino #Mane #VanDijk #Matip #Lovren #Chamberlain #Gomez #Alisson #Keita #TAA #AlexOxladeChamberlain #Henderson #Fabinho #Salah #likeforlike #getlikes #getfollowers 📽@jurgenkloppo96
Furious at the treatment of his under-fire teammate, Lovren – who is still on holiday after reaching the World Cup final – responded to the post with a brutal message.
“You are full of s***,” replied Lovren. “Shame on you how you treat our player! And also the name Liverpool fan page.”
Well played, Dejan.
It may only be a minority of Liverpool fans – but they really must pay attention to the club’s slogan: You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Karius published an emotional message on Instagram after his shaky display against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday night.
