Liverpool Cult Hero wins MLS League Cup

Djimi Traore has succeeded where former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard failed – by getting his hands on the MLS Cup.

Traore is assistant coach of the Seattle Sounders, who lifted the trophy for the first time on Saturday night by beating Toronto FC 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw.

The ex-Mali international ended his playing career at the MLS side in 2014 having earlier spent almost eight years at Anfield.

He was appointed on the coaching staff for the Sounders second team before being promoted to the first-team backroom staff for the start of this season.

Gerrard failed to reach the MLS Cup final in either of his two seasons with LA Galaxy before hanging up his boots last month.

Traore, of course, is no stranger to shoot-out triumphs, having been part of the Liverpool side alongside Gerrard that won the Champions League on spot kicks against AC Milan in 2005.
