Lionel Messi is being trolled about his ‘CL promise’ speech after Liverpool loss

Barcelona looked a broken team when the final whistle sounded at Anfield.

For the second consecutive season, they had thrown away a huge Champions League advantage and allowed their opposition to complete a comeback of historic proportions.

Nobody gave Liverpool a chance of qualification after they were soundly beaten at Camp Nou and most of the focus regarded Lionel Messi’s brilliance on the night.

During that dramatic first leg, the Barcelona super star scored one of the best free-kicks of his career and looked to have reached a first final since their 2015 victory.

However, for whatever reason, Barcelona simply didn’t show up for the return leg and opened the door for Liverpool to complete a comeback being compared to Istanbul.

With Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah ruled out through injury, Divock Origi continued his extraordinary run of scoring crucial goals by opening the scoring after seven minutes.

It was then the turn of Georginio Wijnaldum to become the Liverpool hero, scoring a quick brace off the bench before Origi’s second completed the turnaround.

Quite rightly, much of the focus has been on Liverpool’s superb performance but the shortcomings of Barcelona shouldn’t be forgotten.

That’s especially the case when you consider – after the debacle against AS Roma last season – the club were focusing on the Champions League in 2018/19.

How do we know that? Well, Messi himself made an entire speech about the point when he was appointed club captain last summer.

However, in the aftermath of the Liverpool comeback, Messi has been absolutely panned for his comments on social media and they haven’t exactly aged well.

“Last season was really good as we did the double but we all felt bad about how it went in the Champions League,” Messi remarked.

“We promise that this season we will do all we can to bring that beautiful trophy back to the Camp Nou.”
