Legendary PL Defender: Liverpool have lost their best stopper in Mamadou Sakho

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool have lost their best defender by allowing Mamadou Sakho to join Crystal Palace.

The 26-year-old has moved to Sam Allardyce’s side in a £2 million loan deal, while Palace will also pay the defender’s wages in full.

Sakho has not featured for Liverpool this season after Jurgen Klopp sent him home from the club’s pre-season tour of the United States last summer due to a lack of discipline.

But Ferdinand believes Sakho remained Klopp’s best option ahead of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.

‘I think he’s Liverpool’s best defender when he’s fit and available,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.

‘Last season he was very good and I think they’ve missed him this season. Like Stevie said, he was their leader at the back, athletic.

‘He’ll be a great addition to Crystal Palace because he will add a bit of pace and aggressiveness to the back four.’
